It is a good idea to familiarize yourself of the location of your shut off valve to your home, knowing this could help prevent damage in the event of a pipe burst. Most valves are located where the water service comes from the ground inside to the house. If your house does not have a main valve, or, you do not have shut off valves to each toilet located in the home, this would be money well spent to help prevent possible water damage and costly insurance repairs.
Insulate water pipes that may be vulnerable to cold air, there are many tips online to assist homeowners with winterizing their water lines. Keep your homes temperature above 55 degrees. Learn the location of your water meter on the property and check to make sure the top is secure, a meter without the lid in place and secure can freeze quickly. Disconnect all garden hoses, water remaining in a hose during extreme weather can freeze and damage the hose connection on your home. Close or cover foundation vents to prevent cold air from entering. Never use a torch or any other open flame to thaw a frozen pipe.
